The hedgehog is a small mammal that lives in forests, meadows, scrublands, farmlands, parks, and gardens.

In Greece, it is found throughout the mainland, as well as on several large islands.

It is primarily nocturnal and feeds on snails, slugs, worms, insects, and other invertebrates.

Its body is covered with spines, which can number up to 6,000.

The hedgehogs of our country belong to the species Erinaceus roumanicus, which also lives in Eastern Europe and Western Asia. In the past, they were referred to by the scientific names Erinaceus europaeus and Erinaceus concolor.
